Aims
I wish to explore the question: How does Contemporary Art Practice operate in relation to Knowledge and Know-how?
Establish a comprehensive digital archive of my practice.
Identify residency opportunities for Semester 2
Objectives
- Gain a thorough knowledge of contemporary OOO theory
- Carry out an audit to facilitate a catalogue of completed works and ongoing projects
- Improve competency with audio, video and image editing software
- Critically evaluate my current practice against 2 and new research findings from 1
- From 4 plan and schedule priority projects
- Identify and apply for residency and funding opportunities
Rationale
My belief is that creative practice operates outside the confines of knowledge and know-how. Not in a vague sense of liminality but a tangible space of action. OOO provides a robust theoretical framework for exploring this space.
To ensure that my propensity for working at pace and rapid development of ideas does not impede this research I intend to spend time ensuring that works are sufficiently ‘finished’, documented and archived. Moving my practice to firmer ground in terms of presentation and accessibility after the event. My intent is to pursue a PhD after completing the current course and I am aware how important my portfolio of work will be.
It became clear in the first year that my practice is enriched by working in new spaces and contexts. Thus applying for residencies will be of great benefit to my development.
Project outline
Throughout 703 I shall develop ideas in line with objective 5 identified above. My recent works have all involved a combination of materials and forms of action. Performance and action have become increasingly prominent and I intend for this to continue. I shall explore the site of the body as a material alongside other materials.
Objective 2 is in hand and I intend to have an up to date catalogue in place before 704 begins.
Following discussions with Dr. Thomas Baugh I have decided to attend the Parallax 2 conference and intend to fully exploit the possibilities this will present.
Mapping the field and sources – framing the work
The work of Francis Alys is of great interest to me. I shall explore his Paradox Of Practice in particular.
I shall continue to explore the potential of assemblage. My material interests have returned to more traditional territory combined with newer trade and utility items. I shall continue to use wood and a newfound interest in flesh tint oil paint to ground objects created.
I will continue training in the use of Adobe Suite and other relevant software. I will also attend printmaking workshops.
As stated my theoretical research will centre on OOO. This will supplement ongoing research into perceptual presence.
